Eating disorders wreak havoc on the body in many ways. Bulimia, anorexia nervosa, and obesity strip the body of proper nutrients and kick hormones out of balance. But, not only can these disorders cause excessive weight gain or loss, but also a painful life-altering condition-infertility. (more…)

One week following the UK’s imminent London Fashion Week, campaigners and British government officials will be meeting with advertisers, fashion editors, and health experts to discuss the gravity of digitally retouched fashion advertisements on the health of girls and women. Officials will consider a new government initiative that may require fashion advertisements to carry a label to indicate which photos have been Photoshopped, airbrushed, or otherwise retouched to help readers understand which photographs are displaying unrealistic and unattainable body images.

A new study from Brigham Young University has found that female brains react in a negative way when they view photos of overweight individuals, even when they’re of a normal weight.

In 1988, Abby Ellin was a junior in college, studying abroad in the Middle East and Europe. Describing herself as a chubby adolescent who spent six summers at “fat camp,” she was terrified of gaining weight, although she loved to eat. She writes in the New York Times that “to maintain some semblance of control” she would divide her eating into “Food Days” and “Nonfood Days,” or days when she ate vast amounts and those when she restricted her caloric intake “with military precision.”

Christine Maccia, a high-school senior, has battled an eating disorder since she became a star swimmer who qualified for the Junior Olympics in the seventh grade. Her competiveness, coupled with a history of anxiety, led her to develop an eating disorder.

A new study from the Université de Montréal and the Douglas Mental Health University Institute revealed that about 10 to 15 percent of women are affected by maladaptive eating behaviors and attitudes. Science Daily reports that the study is published in the International Journal of Eating Disorders.
