According to a new study published in the Endocrine Society’s Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism (JCEM), eating a meal quickly curtails the release of hormones in the gut that induce feelings of being full. The decreased release of these hormones can often lead to overeating.

Many people feel tempted to overeat during the holidays, where huge meals take place from Thanksgiving until New Year’s. Monifa Thomas of the Chicago Sun-Times writes that the food-focused holiday holds special dangers for those suffering from binge-eating disorder—a condition in which people eat excessive amounts of food without being able to control their behavior.

Researchers from the Scripps Research Institute have shown in animal models that yo-yo dieting and bouts of sugar-binging (cycling between periods of eating sweet and regular-tasting food) can activate the brain’s stress system and generate overeating, anxiety, and withdrawal-like symptoms.

Scientific evidence shows that our food intake is governed by both the need to eat for survival and the desire to eat, the latter of which is controlled by the dopamine signaling system in our brains. Dopamine controls motivation, movement, and feelings of pleasure, and it urges us to eat and lets us know that eating makes us feel good. The same thing happens in drug addiction.
