Why Some People Keep Eating When Full

New research in mice by UT Southwestern Medical Center scientists suggests that ghrelin—the so-called hunger hormone—might work in the brain to make some people keep eating "pleasurable" foods when they’re already full.

Eating Quickly Associated with Overeating

According to a new study published in the Endocrine Society’s Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism (JCEM), eating a meal quickly curtails the release of hormones in the gut that induce feelings of being full. The decreased release of these hormones can often lead to overeating.

“The Biggest Loser” Contestant’s Addiction to Food

Shay Sorrells, a former contestant on the reality television show “The Biggest Loser,” suffers from a food addiction and was able to lose 100 pounds during her nine-week run on the show. Although she was eliminated from the show, her amazing weight loss—she lost 17 pounds during her last week on the show—set a new record for women on the show.

How to End Overeating

Scientific evidence shows that our food intake is governed by both the need to eat for survival and the desire to eat, the latter of which is controlled by the dopamine signaling system in our brains. Dopamine controls motivation, movement, and feelings of pleasure, and it urges us to eat and lets us know that eating makes us feel good. The same thing happens in drug addiction.

However, for others eating is a compulsion; a quick fix to an underlying problem. In fact, for many there lies a deep and troubling association with food, something people can’t even imagine: addiction. Food addiction is a serious and growing problem, one that is becoming more and more prevalent each day.
