Compulsive Eating is Similar to Alcohol and Drug Addictions

Compulsive eating has been described as a type of addiction since excessive overeating can affect the same reward system in the brain that is altered by substance abuse. Although compulsive eating is not currently classified as a distinct psychiatric disorder, recent research has not only revealed that compulsive eating shares similar characteristics with alcohol and drug addictions, but clinical treatment methods for compulsive drug disorders may also help treat compulsive eating behavior.

Compulsive Eating Linked to Same Brain Mechanisms as Drug Addiction

The terms "food addiction," "food addict," and "food junkie" have long since been incorporated into the American jargon, but new scientific evidence can now justify their implications in the era of the growing American waistband. A study conducted by the Scripps Research Institute and sponsored by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) discovered similarities between the brain mechanisms associated to drug addiction in humans with those of compulsive eating habits and the development of obesity. The study is now available in the online version of Nature Neuroscience journal or its May 2010 print publication.

Compulsive Eating Shares Biochemical Mechanism with Cocaine and Heroin Abuse

In a newly published study, scientists from The Scripps Research Institute have shown for the first time that the same molecular mechanisms that drive people into drug addiction are behind the compulsion to overeat, pushing people into obesity. The new study, conducted by Scripps Research Associate Professor Paul J. Kenny and graduate student Paul M. Johnson, was published March 28, 2010 in an advance online edition of the journal Nature Neuroscience.

Study Examines Chocolate Addiction

A study published in the open access journal BMC Neuroscience has shown that chocolate-craving mice are ready to tolerate electric shocks to get their fix. Rossella Ventura worked with a team of researchers from the Santa Lucia Foundation, Rome, Italy, to study the links between stress and compulsive food-seeking.
