New Minnesota Act to Aid Eating Disorder Treatment

A new act, propelled by two Minnesota senators, seeks to improve the plight of those suffering from eating disorders and prevent future cases. The Freed Act would allocate research money to the National Institutes of Health to better investigate the causes of eating disorders and improve treatment methods. The research would also seek to improve public data on eating disorders, including morbidity and mortality rates.

University of Virginia Aims to Help Students with Eating Disorders

Fifty-four percent of women would rather be hit by a truck than be fat, so it’s no wonder that nearly 10 million females (and 1 million males) in the U.S. are battling eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia, while millions more suffer from binge eating disorder. According to the University of Virginia’s website, studies show that on college campuses, approximately 60 percent of women students have “disordered eating,” and about 20 percent of college students already have had, or are currently living with, an eating disorder.

Portia de Rossi Struggled with Anorexia

Portia de Rossi, actress and wife of Ellen DeGeneres, has revealed she is writing a tell-all autobiography. De Rossi, who had major roles in the television shows “Ally McBeal” and “Arrested Development,” and currently stars in “Better Off Ted,” suffered from anorexia in the late 1990s, dropping to only 84 pounds.

Rise in Number of Teen Girls Being Hospitalized for Eating Disorders in UK

The UK’s Mirror reports that record numbers of school-age girls are being treated for eating disorders. Last year, girls under 18 were admitted to NHS hospitals with problems related to anorexia and bulimia 794 times, a 55 percent increase from 2004-2005, which saw 512 cases.

Girls aged 15 were the most likely to need treatment for their condition, with 194 admissions in the age group last year. But eating disorders have been diagnosed in girls as young as eight.

Nicole Richie Dispels Eating Disorder Rumors

Reality television icon, actress, and mother of two Nicole Richie recently talked with Marie Claire in hopes of dispelling rumors that she was once anorexic. The 28 year old, who was once a size 0, caused some fans to worry in 2006 when photos of her alarmingly thin frame in a bikini surfaced. At the time, she told Vanity Fair, "I know I’m too thin right now. I’m not happy with the way I look right now."

Narrowing Down Eating Disorders

In 1988, Abby Ellin was a junior in college, studying abroad in the Middle East and Europe. Describing herself as a chubby adolescent who spent six summers at “fat camp,” she was terrified of gaining weight, although she loved to eat. She writes in the New York Times that “to maintain some semblance of control” she would divide her eating into “Food Days” and “Nonfood Days,” or days when she ate vast amounts and those when she restricted her caloric intake “with military precision.”
