As many countries deal with concerns over increasing levels of obesity and the implications for health care costs, there is also concern that the understanding of healthy eating habits and overall nutrition may be lacking. Girls Look at Peers to Determine Feelings about Body Weight

A new study finds that teenage girls look at their friends and other schoolmates and peers to determine their feelings about body weight. The study, published in the March issue of the Journal of Health and Social Behavior, shows that a girl attending a school where the average body mass index is high is less likely to diet, and a girl attending a school where the average BMI is low would be more likely to try to lose weight.

Yo-Yo Dieting Can Lead to Anxiety, Stress, and Withdrawal Symptoms

Researchers from the Scripps Research Institute have shown in animal models that yo-yo dieting and bouts of sugar-binging (cycling between periods of eating sweet and regular-tasting food) can activate the brain’s stress system and generate overeating, anxiety, and withdrawal-like symptoms.
