Individuals who suffer from eating disorders tend to feel shame about their disease, hiding their disordered eating from family members and friends. Some are not aware that they have an eating disorder because their body image and reactions to food are based on an unhealthy view of themselves.

Diagnostic cutoffs for anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa may be too strict, a study from the Stanford University School of Medicine and Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital has found. Many patients who do not meet full criteria for these diseases are nevertheless quite ill, and the diagnosis they now receive, "Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified," may delay their ability to get treatment. "There’s mounting evidence that we should reconsider the EDNOS categorization for young people," said Rebecka Peebles, MD, the study’s primary author.

In an article for the New York Times, reporter Jane Brody described her experience with binge-eating disorder: “A half-gallon of ice cream was only the beginning. I was capable of consuming 3,000 calories at a sitting. Many mornings I awakened to find partly chewed food still in my mouth…My despair was profound, and one night in the midst of a binge I became suicidal. I had lost control of my eating; it was controlling me, and I couldn’t go on living that way.”

Millions of people, both female and male, are afflicted by eating disorders, which can range from binging and purging to avoiding food and exercising compulsively. Eating disorders are long-term illnesses that can often lead to death, and they also often co-occur with other disorders such as depression, substance abuse, and anxiety. But the good news is that eating disorders are very treatable, and the sooner you can admit you have a problem and get help, the better your chances for successful recovery.
