University of Virginia Aims to Help Students with Eating Disorders

Fifty-four percent of women would rather be hit by a truck than be fat, so it’s no wonder that nearly 10 million females (and 1 million males) in the U.S. are battling eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia, while millions more suffer from binge eating disorder. According to the University of Virginia’s website, studies show that on college campuses, approximately 60 percent of women students have “disordered eating,” and about 20 percent of college students already have had, or are currently living with, an eating disorder.

Study of Female College Students Shows Difference in Binge Eating Habits Among the Races

Binge eating can be just as detrimental to a person’s mental and physical health as binge drinking or any other impulse activity. To get a better idea of how to prevent and treat those who are dealing with this condition, researchers will examine it from a variety of angles, including race.
