Each year, about10 million Americans seek surgical and nonsurgical cosmetic procedures, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Of the people who seek cosmetic and dermatological treatment to improve their physical appearance, 6% to 15% of them—or an estimated 650,000 Americans—suffer from body dysmorphic disorder.

Those with Body Dysmorphic Disorder See Details, Not Entire Face

An obsession with one or more bodily features, normally in the face, indicates a condition called body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), where individuals believe themselves to be unattractive and compulsively focus on areas of their face or body that they find displeasing. One to two percent of the population is thought to suffer from this mental illness, which leads some patients to seek multiple plastic surgeries. But most people who have the disorder don’t get a diagnosis; they just think they are ugly, said Dr. Jamie Feusner, a psychiatrist at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Singer Lily Allen Admits Having Body Dysmorphic Disorder

Despite her penchant for skimpy onstage outfits and landing a modeling role for Chanel, British pop singer Lily Allen recently admitted to Q Magazine that she suffers from body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). When asked what she sees when she looks in the mirror, the 24-year-old said, "Someone who is more overweight than they actually are."

Was Michael Jackson Anorexic?

Michael Jackson weighed a reported 112 pounds at his death. He was 5 feet 11 inches tall, which would make his body mass index a skeletal 15.6 at the time of his death. A healthy BMI is between 18.5 and 25, and according to the World Health Organization, a BMI of 16.0 is the weight at which one might die of starvation.

Mark Rubi, a writer for www.Examiner.com, poses the question of whether Jackson suffered from anorexia, an eating disorder characterized by an unwillingness to eat. Sources close to Jackson say that he admittedly ate very little, and many who saw him up close over the last few years said he looked very frail.

Most Women Grapple with Body Image Issues

Eating disorders – which are serious, potential life-threatening diseases that develop due to poor body confidence, genetics and the desire to maintain control over the weight of a person’s body – afflicts over 10% of the American population, with many of the sufferers female. However, while many women may not develop full-blown eating disorders, new research has indicated that 65% of women struggle with their body image issues, with many women even going so far as to fast or starve themselves in an effort to lose weight.
