Those without an eating disorder may find it hard to understand why those who do feel compelled to approach food in such a way. For those suffering with a binge eating disorder (BED), they will stuff themselves with a day’s worth of food in two hours or less.

Binge Eating Disorder, or BED, is a psychiatric condition similar to other eating disorders like bulimia, but without the purging behavior, and compulsive overeating, but without the constant fantasizing about food. Some BED sufferers actually have very negative associations with food. Until now, researchers knew little about the underlying causes of BED.

A new study finds that a self-guided, 12-week program helps binge eaters stop binging for up to a year and the program can also save money for those who participate. Recurrent binge eating is the most common eating disorder in the country, affecting more than three percent of the population, or nine million people, yet few treatment options are available.

In an article for the New York Times, reporter Jane Brody described her experience with binge-eating disorder: “A half-gallon of ice cream was only the beginning. I was capable of consuming 3,000 calories at a sitting. Many mornings I awakened to find partly chewed food still in my mouth…My despair was profound, and one night in the midst of a binge I became suicidal. I had lost control of my eating; it was controlling me, and I couldn’t go on living that way.”

Researchers from the University of Minnesota Project Eating Among Teens (EAT) have identified factors that may increase overweight adolescents’ risk of engaging in extreme weight control behaviors such as self-induced vomiting, the use of diet pills, laxatives, and diuretics, as well as binge eating.

Binge-eating disorder is characterized by periods of excessive overeating, often accompanied by feelings of guilt, shame, and loss of control over eating habits. Unlike bulimia, people with binge-eating disorder (BED) usually do not purge or vomit after binge sessions. Binge eating can lead to hypertension (high blood pressure), obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.

Monifa Thomas of the Chicago Sun-Times writes that the food-focused holiday holds special dangers for those suffering from binge-eating disorder—a condition in which people eat excessive amounts of food without being able to control their behavior.
