The cause of eating disorders is somewhat of a mystery. Experts know that eating disorders are caused by a combination of environmental and biological factors, but each patient represents a unique set of factors that contributed to their behaviors. The Jewish culture is very much steeped in food tradition. There are 18 holidays on the Jewish calendar that incorporate food into religious traditions, and this does not include Shabbat, the weekly observance of a day of rest. Pregnancy is a season of life when many women take extra care to eat well and exercise to ensure the health of the baby. However, for women who struggle with eating disorders, pregnancy can be a frightening time, with fears of how disordered eating behaviors may be affecting the baby. In addition, for some with severe eating disorders, pregnancy places an additional physical strain already experienced with the disorder. (more…)
