To learn how to treat individual teen patients with eating disorders, experts may be looking more closely at how the teens act when food is not in the picture, especially in terms of impulsive or reserved behaviors. These types of responses could be a clue to the activity that may be happening inside a patient’s brain, and a clue to which types of treatments may work best.

Foundation Addresses “Epidemic” Numbers of Anorexia in Canadian Province

Sometimes it takes a major tragedy to motivate someone to action, which is the case for Vince Withers, chairman of the Eating Disorder Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador (EDFNL). The Canada-based foundation, featured in an article in The Beacon, focuses on leadership and advocacy toward eating disorders, including support for families and research for new treatments.

Facebook has almost suddenly changed the way many Americans live. Initially derided by many as a waste of time and left to those who “needed a hobby,” the social networking site has bounded past those who tried to dismiss it and claimed the loyalty of millions of users.

Study Shows that Eating Disorders Often Affect Native Americans

 A longstanding misconception about eating disorders—commonly known as “the white woman’s disease”—is that they primarily only affect young, affluent, white females. Yet newer investigations into anorexia nervosa, bulimia, and related problems are showing that the disordered behavior is not, in fact, limited to one race. Furthermore, unhealthy eating behavior among males and females were found to be similar across racial lines, rather than distinctly unique among the races as has been previously believed.

Eating Disorders Common on College Campuses

It is not uncommon to find disorderly conduct within college campus populations. What is unfortunate is that sometimes what is disorderly is the way in which students consume food. A recent Courant article found that eating issues are running rampant on college campuses and they are more common among women.

Family Sitcom Star Candace Cameron Bure Reveals Bulimia Battle in New Book

One of America’s television sweethearts, Candace Cameron Bure, also known as D.J. Tanner, from the 1990s family sitcom Full House, reveals her struggle with the eating disorder bulimia in her new book, “Reshaping It All.”

The book, which hits bookstores in January 2011, explores in detail Candace Cameron Bure’s challenges with starting a new phase of life in Canada after Full House concluded in 1995, alongside new husband and Canadian professional hockey player Valeri Bure.

Body Image Values Already Present in Preschoolers

Previous research has shown that adolescence is a key time of self-identification and comparison with others. Pre-teens and teens seem to be strongly affected by the appearances of their friends and making mental note of how they measure up. A time of physical evaluation combined with a surge of new hormones make adolescence a prime window for eating disorders to surface.
