Eating disorders, such as anorexia and bulimia nervosa, are often perceived by the general population as a lifestyle disease. It is assumed that young women, in particular, choose this alternative lifestyle as a way to be thin, presumably because they are vain and obsessed with their image. (more…)

The cause of eating disorders is somewhat of a mystery. Experts know that eating disorders are caused by a combination of environmental and biological factors, but each patient represents a unique set of factors that contributed to their behaviors. One of America’s television sweethearts, Candace Cameron Bure, also known as D.J. Tanner, from the 1990s family sitcom Full House, reveals her struggle with the eating disorder bulimia in her new book, “Reshaping It All.”
The book, which hits bookstores in January 2011, explores in detail Candace Cameron Bure’s challenges with starting a new phase of life in Canada after Full House concluded in 1995, alongside new husband and Canadian professional hockey player Valeri Bure.

Millions of people living in the United States suffer from bulimia nervosa, a mental disorder that manifests itself in problematic eating habits; these eating habits can lead to long-term health problems. Although bulimia occurs mainly in teens and young adults between the ages of fourteen and twenty, older people are not immune to the disease. People with bulimia typically binge on food in order to feel full, and then purge the food to avoid the weight gain that would inevitably result from such dramatic food intake.

Now the 34-year-old mother of three, wife of NHL player Valeri Bure, and star of ABC’s sitcom Make It or Break It has written a new book titled Reshaping It All, where she discusses the importance of good health in order to lead a happy life. An unhealthy perception of oneself can lead to a full range of unhealthy habits. Eating disorders continue to permeate among the young female segment of the population as the “thin ideal” tends to continue to dominate our thinking. In a recent Daily Mail piece, such unhealthy thinking ended in tragedy.

Pregnancy can be a time of intense monitoring of health and weight. Women can often find themselves plagued with mood swings and a very unpredictable appetite. Just mentioning a particular food may bring on a feeling of queasiness, and pregnant women may be frustrated by cravings for foods, like processed meats, that they are instructed to limit or avoid while pregnant.

Bulimia is an eating disorder characterized by a cycle of binge eating and purging. Binge eating is defined as eating excessive calories in a relatively short amount of time, while purging follows by using vomiting or laxatives to prevent the food from causing any weight gain.

While many of us eat to gain strength and energy, there are others who eat for very different reasons. Some may eat for comfort, while others are seeking control. Still others are eating to feed a monster deep inside themselves that they cannot understand or escape. For too many, this monster is bulimia nervosa.
