Anorexia is a mental disorder that plagues millions of people, often hitting young women the hardest. Its symptoms are rooted in negative thought patterns, and as a result, can have aspects that mimic the symptoms of other types of mental disorders, such as depression or anxiety.

Young girls with eating disorders often develop them at a time when they are naturally opening up to their parents less and keeping more of their lives to themselves. The shame that is involved with eating disorders, however, causes a topic that desperately needs attention to be hidden for years before a young person may realize that they need help.

Anorexia is an eating disorder that plagues primarily young women, characterized by extreme caloric limitations, excessive exercise and at its root a distorted body image. Anorexics often struggle alone, hiding their disordered behaviors from loved ones. By the time they feel compelled to talk to a doctor, they are often experiencing symptoms of secondary health problems.

Eating disorders thrive on secrecy. Once the individual suffering with an eating disorder seeks professional help, they have overcome a major hurdle by putting their struggle out in the open. Many people with eating disorders hide them for several years before admitting they have a problem and seeking the assistance of their doctor.

One week following the UK’s imminent London Fashion Week, campaigners and British government officials will be meeting with advertisers, fashion editors, and health experts to discuss the gravity of digitally retouched fashion advertisements on the health of girls and women. Officials will consider a new government initiative that may require fashion advertisements to carry a label to indicate which photos have been Photoshopped, airbrushed, or otherwise retouched to help readers understand which photographs are displaying unrealistic and unattainable body images.

The runway is teeming with beautiful young models, with all eyes in the audience pinned to the stick-thin models jutting their bony hips out of the latest styles. Photo spreads in magazines also glorify thinness, with editors using computer technology to further slim models or celebrities and “correct” any possible flaws. In the mall, young women are lured into stores with mannequins in the windows sporting size 0 outfits.

Eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia nervosa are much more common in females than in males. They most often appear during adolescence through early adulthood and can torment the young woman for many years in secret before she admits, even to herself, that there is a problem.
