The disorders, however, affect all ages and may be missed in a loved one that does not fit into a parent’s idea of a child at risk for an eating disorder.

For millions of Americans, eating disorders have caused havoc, despair, pain, and loss. Family members of an anorexic or bulimic person understand the anguish and desperation involved when struggling to intervene and treat a loved one who has become entrapped by this serious mental illness. Although eating disorder sufferers are more difficult to intervene with than individuals with more common mental disorders, recovery is possible with long-term physical and psychiatric treatment, backed by dedication and family support.

Television Increases Risk of Eating Disorders

No single factor guarantees that a young girl will develop an eating disorder. However, certain circumstances can elevate the risk of developing an eating disorder. For instance, media images in magazines or participation in a cheerleading squad or sorority will not cause an eating disorder, but may raise the risk of developing one.

Exercise is certainly a good thing for most people – but for those suffering from anorexia athletica, it may be too much of a good thing. The disorder causes people to over exercise and become obsessed with working out, to the point that it can cause health problems and social consequences. This complex disorder may be especially dangerous for young women, who strive to keep up with media images of thin bodies.
