Eating disorders are often seen clustered in certain types of groups, especially groups that are all-female. For instance, cheerleading and sorority groups provide an important outlet for young women to enjoy their hobbies, but an intense pressure to look a certain way sometimes can breed problems in the eating habits of young women that participate in the groups.

If you have an eating disorder and have also experienced trauma at some point in your past (or current) life, you may feel that you’re destined to remain miserable, alone, insecure, fearful, and misunderstood. It doesn’t have to be this way. It is possible to overcome trauma and eating disorder with appropriate treatment and effective support.

Many young children shun certain types of food. They may reject whole groups of foods, like vegetables or meat. Others have different qualifiers for the foods they eat, such as eating only orange foods or foods that can be eaten with a spoon. There are even kids whose parents claim their children live solely on fruit snacks.

Eating disorders often make their symptoms known in adolescence, when hormones are involved in major changes to the body. Young teens often succumb to the pressures to look a certain way and develop an eating disorder.

Parents know that their children are growing up in a complicated world, being ambushed from every angle with media. They are the target of a constant barrage of images of celebrities, fashion and advertising, with every image carrying with it an opinion of the right way to act or look.

Those who suffer from eating disorders experience a distortion of body image, resulting in strong feelings of dissatisfaction with their physical appearance. Often a person struggling with disordered eating will reinforce that dissatisfaction by dwelling on images of what they consider to be an appealing body shape.

Individuals who suffer from eating disorders tend to feel shame about their disease, hiding their disordered eating from family members and friends. Some are not aware that they have an eating disorder because their body image and reactions to food are based on an unhealthy view of themselves.

Eating disorders are commonly considered to be a problem primarily for young women. Disordered eating behaviors most often occur during puberty and the higher risk continues throughout young adulthood. A new study, however, reveals that young men are struggling with eating disorders as well.

While many of us eat to gain strength and energy, there are others who eat for very different reasons. Some may eat for comfort, while others are seeking control. Still others are eating to feed a monster deep inside themselves that they cannot understand or escape. For too many, this monster is bulimia nervosa.
