New Minnesota Act to Aid Eating Disorder Treatment

A new act, propelled by two Minnesota senators, seeks to improve the plight of those suffering from eating disorders and prevent future cases. The Freed Act would allocate research money to the National Institutes of Health to better investigate the causes of eating disorders and improve treatment methods. The research would also seek to improve public data on eating disorders, including morbidity and mortality rates.

Studies Examine Bone Loss in Patients Suffering Anorexia Nervosa

Eating Disorder Diagnosis May Be Missing Seriously Ill Patients

While diagnostic tests are necessary to determine whether or not an individual is sick and needs help, a new study has determined that diagnostic cutoffs for anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa may actually be too strict. This finding is from the Stanford University School of Medicine and Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital.

Researcher Seeks Emotional Causes of Eating Disorders

When it comes to treating people suffering from eating disorders, Michelle Emmerling would like to see caregivers look beyond the physical issues. Emmerling, a PhD candidate in counseling psychology in the Faculty of Education at the University of Alberta, is focusing her doctoral research on the role of psychological and emotional factors for anorexics—she wants to give voice to their struggles and the causes of their disorder.

Eating Disorder Diagnosis Cutoffs May Be Too Strict

Diagnostic cutoffs for anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa may be too strict, a study from the Stanford University School of Medicine and Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital has found. Many patients who do not meet full criteria for these diseases are nevertheless quite ill, and the diagnosis they now receive, "Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified," may delay their ability to get treatment. "There’s mounting evidence that we should reconsider the EDNOS categorization for young people," said Rebecka Peebles, MD, the study’s primary author.

Study Finds Self-Monitored Binge Eating Program Successful
