Research from the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) has demonstrated that eating disorders are not simply a female issue – males suffer as well. While 10 percent of all reported eating disorders are in male individuals, it is important to understand what characteristics play into these disorders.

Studies Show Eating Disorders Do Not Favor Females Exclusively

Eating disorders can consume those who suffer from a variety of conditions, but the assumption is that eating disorders only impact women. In truth, roughly ten percent of eating disorder individuals seeking help from mental health professionals are actually men and their disorders are clinically similar to eating disorders in women, according to a National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) study.

Fashion Icons Talk Eating Disorders at Harvard Business School

The event was hosted by MGH’s Harris Center for Education and Advocacy in Eating Disorders and its director Dr. David B. Herzog.

Four years ago, when Jenna (name has been changed) decided she needed to lose weight, she tried every diet from Atkins to Weight Watchers. When those didn’t work, she became a vegetarian, writes Marina Khidekel of Teen Vogue. “I read somewhere that most of the fat you eat comes from meat,” says Jenna, now sixteen, from New York City. But when she stopped eating meat, Jenna started obsessing about everything she ate.

Eating Disorders Becoming More Common Among Elementary School Kids

Eating disorders among elementary school children are on the rise, according to Liz McKenna, a psychologist at the Richmond Eating Disorder Program in Richmond, British Columbia. In the last 10 years, McKenna has noticed children as young as six years old developing eating disorders.

Girls Look at Peers to Determine Feelings about Body Weight

A new study finds that teenage girls look at their friends and other schoolmates and peers to determine their feelings about body weight. The study, published in the March issue of the Journal of Health and Social Behavior, shows that a girl attending a school where the average body mass index is high is less likely to diet, and a girl attending a school where the average BMI is low would be more likely to try to lose weight.

University of Virginia Aims to Help Students with Eating Disorders

Fifty-four percent of women would rather be hit by a truck than be fat, so it’s no wonder that nearly 10 million females (and 1 million males) in the U.S. are battling eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia, while millions more suffer from binge eating disorder. According to the University of Virginia’s website, studies show that on college campuses, approximately 60 percent of women students have “disordered eating,” and about 20 percent of college students already have had, or are currently living with, an eating disorder.
