Portia de Rossi, actress and wife of Ellen DeGeneres, has revealed she is writing a tell-all autobiography. De Rossi, who had major roles in the television shows “Ally McBeal” and “Arrested Development,” and currently stars in “Better Off Ted,” suffered from anorexia in the late 1990s, dropping to only 84 pounds.

Our culture is notoriously body and weight conscious. Many people have chronic difficulties accepting their own size, shape and weight (body-image). Media such as magazines, television and advertising present images of thin and athletic people against whom we compare ourselves and most—even healthy individuals—cite some dissatisfaction with body-image. Consequently, diagnosing an eating disorder requires a hard look at issues apart from body-image or dissatisfaction with one’s own body.

A study published in the open access journal BMC Neuroscience has shown that chocolate-craving mice are ready to tolerate electric shocks to get their fix. Rossella Ventura worked with a team of researchers from the Santa Lucia Foundation, Rome, Italy, to study the links between stress and compulsive food-seeking.

An obsession with one or more bodily features, normally in the face, indicates a condition called body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), where individuals believe themselves to be unattractive and compulsively focus on areas of their face or body that they find displeasing. One to two percent of the population is thought to suffer from this mental illness, which leads some patients to seek multiple plastic surgeries. But most people who have the disorder don’t get a diagnosis; they just think they are ugly, said Dr. Jamie Feusner, a psychiatrist at the University of California, Los Angeles.

The UK’s Mirror reports that record numbers of school-age girls are being treated for eating disorders. Last year, girls under 18 were admitted to NHS hospitals with problems related to anorexia and bulimia 794 times, a 55 percent increase from 2004-2005, which saw 512 cases.
Girls aged 15 were the most likely to need treatment for their condition, with 194 admissions in the age group last year. But eating disorders have been diagnosed in girls as young as eight.
