Women who struggle with a distorted body image sometimes have symptoms that result in an eating disorder such as bulimia or anorexia. Studies have indicated that there may be a connection between eating disorders and substance abuse among those being treated for eating disorders (Blinder, Cumella & Sanathara, 2006; Conason, Brunsein Klomek & Sher, 2006).

For Some, Smartphones May Trigger Eating Disorders

For some people, owning a smartphone such as a BlackBerry or an iPhone can lead to developing (or furthering) an eating disorder. Experts say applications that allow users to count calories and monitor their weight can trigger obsessive behaviors.

Why Some People Keep Eating When Full

New research in mice by UT Southwestern Medical Center scientists suggests that ghrelin—the so-called hunger hormone—might work in the brain to make some people keep eating "pleasurable" foods when they’re already full.

Eating Disorders Affect 10 to 15 Percent of Women

A new study from the Université de Montréal and the Douglas Mental Health University Institute revealed that about 10 to 15 percent of women are affected by maladaptive eating behaviors and attitudes. Science Daily reports that the study is published in the International Journal of Eating Disorders.

News stories abound about rail-thin young women starving themselves in the quest for superstardom in the world of high-fashion modeling, Hollywood movie and television celebrities suddenly becoming painfully thin – emaciated, really – or just everyday girls and women hating their bodies so much they refuse to take in enough nourishment to keep them alive. An equal-opportunity disorder, men are also affected. An estimated 7 million women and 1 million men suffer from eating disorders. Yes, it is true: what you don’t put into your mouth can very well kill you.

Our Choice in Diet Can Impact Our Behavior

Does the way we eat impact the way we behave? Research from the Scripps Research Institute suggests that cycling between periods of eating sweet and regular-tasting food can activate the brain’s stress system and generate overeating, anxiety and withdrawal-like symptoms.

Singer Lily Allen Admits Having Body Dysmorphic Disorder

Despite her penchant for skimpy onstage outfits and landing a modeling role for Chanel, British pop singer Lily Allen recently admitted to Q Magazine that she suffers from body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). When asked what she sees when she looks in the mirror, the 24-year-old said, "Someone who is more overweight than they actually are."
