Even before they start school, many young girls worry that they are fat. But a new study suggests that watching a movie starring a stereotypically thin and beautiful princess may not increase children’s anxieties.

Is binge eating a form of addiction? That is one question that was asked by a reporter for the LA Times in a recent article. To classify it as such would be to recognize it as a mental disorder. There is a psychiatric debate over whether or not to recognize the roughly 7.3 million adults as having a mental disorder that leads them to consume unheard of amounts of food to satisfy something unexplained.

Many people feel tempted to overeat during the holidays, where huge meals take place from Thanksgiving until New Year’s. Monifa Thomas of the Chicago Sun-Times writes that the food-focused holiday holds special dangers for those suffering from binge-eating disorder—a condition in which people eat excessive amounts of food without being able to control their behavior.

Anorexic patients drastically reduce their food intake and are often not capable of changing their behavior, which can lead to life-threatening weight loss. Using MRI technology, scientists at Heidelberg University Hospital have discovered for the first time processes in brain metabolism that explain this disordered eating behavior.

Most normal-weight women—almost 90 percent in a 2007 Cornell study of 310 college students—want to be thinner, and half of underweight women want to lose even more weight. Meanwhile, most overweight women don’t want to be thin enough to achieve a healthy weight.

Singer Alanis Morissette recently opened up to Health magazine about her troubled past, admitting she was both anorexic and bulimic as a teen. "I was a young woman in the public eye, on the receiving end of a lot of attention, and I was trying to protect myself from men who were using their power in ways I was too young to know how to handle,” she is quoted as saying in the December issue of the magazine.

Shay Sorrells, a former contestant on the reality television show “The Biggest Loser,” suffers from a food addiction and was able to lose 100 pounds during her nine-week run on the show. Although she was eliminated from the show, her amazing weight loss—she lost 17 pounds during her last week on the show—set a new record for women on the show.

Researchers from the Scripps Research Institute have shown in animal models that yo-yo dieting and bouts of sugar-binging (cycling between periods of eating sweet and regular-tasting food) can activate the brain’s stress system and generate overeating, anxiety, and withdrawal-like symptoms.
