For millions of Americans food is simply seen as a necessity of life–you eat for energy when your body needs to refuel. However, for others eating is a compulsion; a quick fix to an underlying problem. In fact, for many there lies a deep and troubling association with food, something people can’t even imagine: addiction. Food addiction is a serious and growing problem, one that is becoming more and more prevalent each day.

In our society, there is a perception that bulimia strikes the privileged. Driven by mainstream media and shows such as “Gossip Girl”, this perception has recently been proven to be wrong.
Science Daily has reported on the results of a new study that shows African American girls as bring 50 percent more likely than white girls to be bulimic. In addition, girls from families in the lowest income bracket were 153 percent more likely to suffer from this disease than those from the highest income bracket. (more…)

Millions of people, both female and male, are afflicted by eating disorders, which can range from binging and purging to avoiding food and exercising compulsively. Eating disorders are long-term illnesses that can often lead to death, and they also often co-occur with other disorders such as depression, substance abuse, and anxiety. But the good news is that eating disorders are very treatable, and the sooner you can admit you have a problem and get help, the better your chances for successful recovery.

We all know that we’re constantly bombarded with advertisements featuring trim women and muscle-bound men every day – but new research has placed a figure on just how many advertisements the media exposes us to:
400-600 each day.
Yes, you read that right. With 400-600 advertisements exposing us to the media’s idea of the perfect man and woman, it’s no wonder that more young teens – and even middle-aged adults – are developing severe eating disorders in their quests for the “perfect body”.

Pregorexia arises when a pregnant woman starves herself in order to stay skinny during her pregnancy. Whether you choose to point the finger at celebrity moms or at women who devote themselves entirely to the gym just days after giving birth, this new trend reflects the growing belief in Western society that women should return to their pre-baby weight as quickly as possible. While many women rally against this disturbing belief, other pregnant moms are influenced by this thought; thus, they deprive themselves and their babies of the vital nutrients they both need. Eating disorders are one of the most common diseases to afflict America’s youth – and it’s not just teens who are suffering from this debilitating disease. More adults than ever (including those who are 50+) are starting to show symptoms commonly associated with anorexia and bulimia. Experts pinpoint this new phenomenon as a result of the media’s constant bombardment of stick-thin models, as well as the harried lifestyles that we lead in this modern time. Between darting to and from the office, picking up the kids from school and maintaining a happy household, many adults are stuck wondering if they’ll ever be able to have time to eat again.

It’s no secret that anorexia nervosa is an epidemic that’s been sweeping the nation, especially among preteen and teen girls. As young girls and boys grow into their bodies and start to experience changes brought on by puberty, many start to starve themselves as a way of gaining control over these uncomfortable changes. Additionally, with the amount of stick-thin models that teens are exposed to on a daily basis, it’s no wonder that America’s youth are in a constant battle with their weight.
